Frizzy Lizzy, Roly Poly & Dandy Sandy

Well, the butterfly tending continued through August and we successfully rescued 3 caterpillars from the wasps and watched them go through their metamorphosis process. It's hard work keeping a caterpillar happy, let alone 3! But we managed to do it and had another fun send-off, this time with triplet black swallowtails. Here are the photos of the various stages we enjoyed and the videos of the kids releasing the butterflies at the end.

2 black swallowtail caterpillars just before they went into chrysalis...the 2 different coverings that they created once they went into chrysalis.

Emerging from the chrysalis, all wrinkled and rumpled...then fully 'inflated' (underbelly view).

Zeke was mesmerized by the houseguests.........ready for take off! (top view)

Bye Bye Lizzie, Poly & Sandy!

These are very, very cool pictures. I love that you were able to take a picture of the freshly-hatched (that's not the right word, is it?!) butterfly. I am amazed again and again by God's artistry. By the way, when we go out the garden, Delaney calls out, "butterfly! butterfly!" (and she says it clearly, too!).

That looks so fun! I bet my kids would love that too-- I will have to try next summer.
